HNA at Agape Service Project 2024

.

In keeping with the HNA's mission to “inspire young women of diverse beliefs and backgrounds to act with purpose, advocate for social justice, and serve with compassion,” a group of rising 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade HNA students went on a five-day service-learning retreat with the Agape Service Project, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Seattle. HNA students traveled to Whatcom County and, throughout the week, learned about human dignity, issues affecting migrant farmworkers, and why we are called to serve. Here are a few excerpts from their week.

In very warm temperatures, students harvested cilantro (500 bunches!) and spinach.

Students re-bagged 50-pound bags of sugar, masa, and rice into smaller portions in preparation for food bank distribution.

The average migrant worker family makes <$30K per year, estimated to allow for approximately $11 for a family's lunch every day. Students received $11 and 30 minutes at a local grocery store to prep a “family lunch” for their group.

For the ten weeks of harvest season, Agape Food Bank, in partnership with the Bellingham and Ferndale Food Banks, is the second busiest food bank in Whatcom County, and specializes in culturally-relevant food.

Feedback from students participating in Agape has been very positive, and several have returned for multiple years of service.  Thank you to Agape Service Project for this wonderful opportunity. Learn more about Agape Service Project
